“Shear Power Invitational”

Perth City Muster

Claremont Showgrounds

February 25th 2006

The “Shear Power Invitational” is the world’s newest and most exciting international shearing competition. Following the launch in Perth, Western Australia, a national and international series is scheduled, which aims to bring this fast paced sport to the mainstream.

This three and a half hour spectacle will incorporate “Speedshear World Records”, the explosive “Shear Power Sprint” and the “Celebrity Challenge”. The biggest legends of the sport from five countries will compete for the World Record and have the opportunity to earn points towards being named “the Gun” (the highest ranked Shearer) at the end of the series via the “Sprint”. Kiwi legend Darin Forde, South African Ken Norman, Englishman Mark Fox, Scotsman Tom Wilson and Australia’s own Brett King form an impressive line up. (See profile attachment).

The Merino Ewe Speedshear World Record is up for grabs and kick starts the event. Two World Record Committee judges will be present with each Shearer having two attempts with the fastest attempt receiving the World Record. The attempts are critically judged and require a fleece weight of 3.4kg and the ewe to be at least 18 months old. The Speedshear World Record Committee was formed several years ago to uniform the sports official records. There are several of the sports nine categories that are yet to have benchmarks and the Merino Ewe is one of them.

The “Shear Power Sprint” involves each competitor blasting in two five-minute heats on cross-bred lambs with tallies recorded. Dead locked tallies will be decided over a sudden death Shear off. The two top shearers will go head to head in a ten-minute final. This new format breaks from traditional Shearing competitions, which have been around for decades, and its fast paced nature will excite and intrigue.

With more nations to be added to the competition list and a deep talent pool of respected guns the “Shear Power Invitational” is set to be Shearing’s biggest promotion into the conventional sporting market to date.

The “Celebrity Challenge” will take place from 5pm and include a cross section of talent.  Instructors from Australian Wool Innovation’s Shearer and Wool handling Training Program will coach the celebrities through their one sheep attempt with the fastest time winning and donating their award to next year’s Appealathon (a Channel 9 charity).

Competitors include:

Ryan Campbell (former Australian One Day and Western Warriors cricketer and Postcards WA presenter)

Naum Sekulovski (Perth Glory national soccer team)

Kelli Haywood (Perth Lynx national women’s basketball team)

Brendan Rinaldi (Subiaco Football Club, Western Australian State League)

Cameron Morse (editor of Countryman Newspaper)

Steve Turner (Professional Perth actor)

Paul Hooper (Farm Weekly Journalist)

The “Shear Power Invitational” will take place between 2.30pm and 6.00pm with the awards ceremony taking place on the Muster’s main stage at 7.20pm and will be presented by Australia’s Country Music Association Artist of the Year, Adam Harvey.
